We are an assembly of international artists, performers, curators, researchers, authors, activists, care practitioners and allies who refuse to think of art as detached from the relations that shape our lives, care and community.
M.A.R.S. is both a laboratory and a solidarity echo chamber, where individual voices grow into collective visibility. We create exhibitions, performances, publications, editions, workshops, talks, and collective experiments that link aesthetics with social imagination.
Art is our tool, our language, our resonance space. Our practice emerges from everyday realities where art making and care work collide, intertwine and sometimes resist each other within systems that often make this balance impossible. It is rooted locally while unfolding connections that extend beyond cities and countries.
Our incentive is rooted in the belief that art does not act in isolation, but carries responsibility: for people, for structures, for futures. We retell stories, make invisible work visible and open spaces in which power and care can be renegotiated.
M.A.R.S. stands for Maternal Artistic Research Studio. The term “maternal” relates not primarily to the role of mother or woman in society, but more broadly to a nurturing position historically devalued, privatized, and romanticized. We reclaim and queer this position as a site of knowledge. Through creative and collective practice, it unfolds into radical transformation and emancipation. Rather than referring to motherhood itself, the “maternal” speaks to all who recognize care as a cultural and socio-political force and embrace it as collective transformation.
MARS envisions an art that emerges from a position of taking care – not as a limitation, but as a generative and integrative force for futures built on compassion and interdependence.
